A minimum of thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
