Administration Announces Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.
While Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Previously, unions sought a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.
A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
