A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the period preceding Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the president had been seized.

One account, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other individuals also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
