Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
