Time is optimal to alter Manchester United's formation - Amorim declares.

Man Utd players in training
Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was among multiple first-team stars to miss the Boxing Day victory against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim says that switching Man Utd's tactical system due to public pressure would have been "his demise" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle, Amorim moved away from his usual three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and instead deploy an standard back four with two defensive midfielders.

By his own admission this at times transformed into a back six in the latter minutes as his squad clung on for a win - securing only their second clean sheet of the season.

Despite he once notably stated that not even the highest authority could force him to adjust his system, Amorim asserts the capacity to utilize alternative formations has consistently been part of his long-term vision.

Nevertheless, he emphasizes he could solely implement the change when his team were performing at an acceptable level - lest it would appear as if he was bowing to external criticism.

"When I came here last season, I recognized perhaps I lacked the players to perform effectively in a back three, but it was the commencement of a process," he said.

"Our aim was to build an identity. Currently is a different time. We are missing a lot of personnel, and we need be flexible, so they understand the reason we are making changes.

"It is not because of the demands of the media, or the faithful.

"Whenever media discuss altering the formation all the time, I cannot make a change because the squad will believe I'm changing because of you and I feel that is the downfall for the manager.

"When we are getting results in our system, that is the opportunity to adapt.

"This will help us develop into a more complete side because when our full complement of players return, we are not going to play with three defenders all the time."

Injury Crisis Persist

With just two victories in eight games prior to defeating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to state his team have been playing well.

He is, though, operating with a depleted squad, with multiple senior stars already ruled out for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will increase if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to recover the injury that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be pressing his boss to allow him to make a comeback after his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already saying he needs to practice," said Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

The Captain's Role Remains

However, the 31-year-old will almost certainly continue to be heavily involved, as while most unavailable players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to continue offering input.

"He is a leader," he declared. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly vocal. That is the reason he's the captain.

"There are negative aspects at times - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a lot of positive qualities. Even after he recovers, he goes to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Schedule for Key Personnel

While the specific timeline for Fernandes' comeback - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
